About Chegg and Chegg Skills

Chegg is a publicly listed connected learning platform based in Santa Clara, California (NYSE: CHGG). Famous for pioneering affordable textbook rentals, Chegg has expanded over the years into a comprehensive digital learning ecosystem serving millions of students worldwide. Its core offerings include Chegg Study, Chegg Writing, Chegg Math, and Chegg Skills.

The Chegg Skills division focuses specifically on post-collegiate learners and career switchers. As part of this team, engineers build digital tools that allow students to bridge the gap between learning theoretical concepts and landing high-growth jobs. You will be working with a distributed team of engineers to build web interfaces, learning management modules, and AI-assisted educational workflows that make modern learning affordable and accessible.

Detailed Job Description & Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer II on the frontend team, you will take ownership of features end-to-end across student-facing and educator-facing web applications. While this is primarily a frontend role focused on React and Next.js, you will also interact with backend microservices, GraphQL supergraphs, and AWS cloud tools whenever feature delivery calls for full-stack collaboration.

Key day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • End-to-End Feature Ownership: Drive the complete lifecycle of frontend features — from architectural design and UI component development to testing, phased rollout, and production monitoring.
  • Architecture & Component Design: Turn product designs into clean React component structures, define GraphQL queries and schemas, and handle application state using React Query, Redux Toolkit, or Zustand.
  • Cross-System Debugging: Trace and resolve complex issues across the frontend-backend boundary, such as GraphQL supergraph errors, auth/session state bugs, and server vs client rendering mismatches.
  • AI Feature Integration: Safely integrate AI-powered learning tools into the UI. This includes handling streaming responses, validating AI model output before display, and implementing fallback UI states.
  • Performance Optimization: Monitor and improve Core Web Vitals, optimize JavaScript bundle sizes, and refine rendering strategies to ensure snappy user experiences.
  • Security & Testing: Implement front-end security practices like input validation and XSS/CSRF protection. Maintain robust test coverage using Vitest, React Testing Library, and Playwright.

Eligibility Criteria & Skills Required

Chegg is looking for candidates who demonstrate strong technical fundamentals, self-direction, and a solid track record in modern web development. Here is what you need to qualify:

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • Experience: At least 4 years of professional experience building and scaling production frontend web applications.
  • Core Frameworks: Expert knowledge of React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
  • APIs & Data Layers: Hands-on experience working with GraphQL (schema design, query writing, codegen), REST APIs, and client-state libraries like React Query, Redux Toolkit, or Zustand.
  • Testing Tools: Good experience with unit/component testing (Vitest or Jest, React Testing Library) and end-to-end testing (Playwright or Cypress).
  • Web Fundamentals: Good understanding of web security concepts (XSS, CSRF, Auth handling), Core Web Vitals, and WCAG accessibility standards.

Good-to-Have / Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with styling approaches like CSS-in-JS (styled-components) and component UI libraries like Material UI (MUI).
  • Basic knowledge of Node.js and cloud infrastructure on AWS (compute, networking, storage basics) to navigate Java, Kotlin, or Python backend codebases when required.
  • Exposure to authentication platforms like Auth0 in Next.js applications.
  • Experience building UI for streaming AI models (OpenAI, AWS Bedrock) and using observability platforms like New Relic.

Hiring & Selection Process

The standard selection process for software engineering roles at Chegg typically involves the following stages:

  1. Application Screening: Initial review of your resume and GitHub/portfolio projects by the talent acquisition team.
  2. Technical Telephonic Round: A 45-60 minute interview focusing on JavaScript core concepts, React fundamentals, state management, and basic problem-solving.
  3. Frontend Coding & Architecture Round: Hands-on coding session to evaluate component design, Next.js knowledge, TypeScript usage, and GraphQL API integration.
  4. Engineering Leadership Round: Deep dive into your past projects, system architecture capabilities, full-stack understanding, and AI tool integration.
  5. HR & Cultural Alignment Round: Discussion regarding team fit, compensation expectations, work culture, and remote/hybrid work policies.
