About Sage: What Does the Company Do?
Headquartered in the UK with operations worldwide, Sage is a trusted partner for millions of small and mid-sized enterprises across the globe. From cloud accounting, payroll, and HR management to full-blown enterprise resource planning (ERP), Sage builds software that takes the heavy lifting out of business operations. Instead of getting stuck in administrative chaos, businesses use Sage platforms to operate smoothly, manage finances accurately, and scale without friction.
The Bangalore technology centre serves as one of Sage’s prime innovation hubs. The engineering teams in India work hand-in-hand with squads across the UK, Europe, and North America. You will not be working on simple maintenance tickets; you will be solving core architectural challenges, helping transform legacy business software into modern SaaS applications that handle high transactional traffic.
The Context: Modernising Sage X3
Sage X3 is one of the company’s most popular ERP systems used by mid-market manufacturers, distributors, and service providers worldwide. Right now, Sage is running a huge engineering modernisation program. The goal is to move from tightly-coupled monolithic systems toward modern, cloud-native services that run reliably on Kubernetes with clean API contracts.
As a Software Engineer in this squad, your mission will be to implement well-tested slices of this modernisation roadmap. You will write code that makes business logic portable, design backward-compatible APIs, and help ensure that millions of enterprise customers experience zero downtime or regressions during system upgrades.
Key Responsibilities: What Will You Do Day-to-Day?
- Develop Production Services: Build and ship features, API endpoints, micro-components, and data migration tools using clean design patterns and thorough test coverage.
- Safe Refactoring & Modernisation: Understand the business logic behind Sage X3 workflows and rewrite legacy patterns into modular, cloud-operable services without breaking existing partner plugins or user workflows.
- API-First Engineering: Build, version, and document reliable REST and GraphQL interfaces while keeping backward compatibility intact.
- Cloud & DevOps Collaboration: Use CI/CD pipelines, container tools like Docker, and orchestrators like Kubernetes. You will take ownership of the services you deploy all the way to production.
- Observability and Support: Use telemetry tools, structured logging, and metrics (such as OpenTelemetry patterns) to identify runtime bottlenecks early, write hotfixes, and maintain clear documentation.
- Code Quality & Agile Sprints: Actively take part in pull request reviews, sprint planning, and design discussions alongside Principal Engineers and product managers in Europe and North America.
Eligibility Criteria & Educational Background
- Work Experience: Typically 2 or more years of hands-on software development experience building production systems.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree, Diploma, or Apprenticeship in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or an allied technical branch. Equivalent practical industry experience is equally respected.
- Communication: Fluent, professional verbal and written English skills since you will collaborate with remote squads across different time zones.
- Work Model: Hybrid setup at Sage’s Bangalore office. Candidates should be open to working from the office on designated team days.
Technical Skills Required
Sage is language-flexible, but they focus heavily on solid software engineering fundamentals. Here is a breakdown of what they expect:
- Core Programming: Deep comfort with at least one modern language such as TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Go, Rust, Java, or C#.
- Distributed Systems Concepts: Understanding service-to-service communication, asynchronous queues, resilience patterns, fault tolerance, and eventual consistency.
- Web Development & Frontend: Practical experience building dynamic user interfaces using React, TypeScript, state management systems, and component testing libraries.
- Databases: Good command over both relational databases (like PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQL Server) and document/NoSQL stores, including data modeling and query optimization.
- Containers & Infrastructure: Hands-on experience with containerisation (Docker) and basic knowledge of Kubernetes clusters, CI/CD pipelines, and automated test runners.
- Good to Have: Prior exposure to ERP systems, finance/accounting workflows, Progress 4GL / L4G codebases, or using modern AI coding assistants responsibly with human verification.
Standard Recruitment Process
While interview formats can adjust slightly depending on team schedules, the hiring round usually includes:
- Resume Shortlisting: Talent acquisition reviews your past project experience, tech stack relevance, and GitHub profile or work history.
- Technical Screening / Coding Round: A live coding interview or assignment covering problem-solving, clean code design, and data structures.
- Technical Architecture & System Design: Discussion around APIs, microservices, container deployment, database choices, and handling scaling challenges.
- Engineering Manager / Cultural Discussion: An interview centered on collaboration, how you handle ambiguity, cross-border team communication, and your approach to continuous learning.
How to Apply for this Software Engineer Position
Interested developers can submit their applications directly through the Sage official career portal. Keep an updated copy of your resume ready with specific details highlighting your experience with API design, microservices, and React/backend development.
Helpful Tip: Since this role involves both modern language programming and cloud migrations, make sure your resume clearly mentions projects where you wrote automated tests, handled CI/CD deployments, or improved API performance. That helps your application stand out directly to the hiring managers.
