Role Responsibilities and Daily Work

As a Network Operations & DevOps Intern, your primary target will be building, automating, and maintaining reliable infrastructure. You will work within a modern Network Operations Center (NOC) environment that prioritizes workflow automation over simple manual troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • DevOps & Process Automation: Help write basic scripts using Python, Bash, or PowerShell to reduce repetitive manual work and simplify routine system updates.
  • Continuous Integration & IaC: Learn and support Infrastructure as Code principles using tools like Terraform, and monitor configuration changes across active CI/CD pipelines.
  • Observability & Monitoring: Work directly with telemetry, dashboarding, and alerting setups using platforms like Grafana, LogicMonitor, or ManageEngine.
  • Network Monitoring & Incident Triage: Monitor routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and cloud connectivity round-the-clock, maintaining clear response timelines for operational alerts.
  • Troubleshooting & Incident Lifecycle: Perform initial fault isolation, record and trace technical tickets in JIRA or ServiceNow, and coordinate smoothly with L2/L3 domain experts.
  • Documentation & Standard Operating Procedures: Prepare comprehensive Root Cause Analysis (RCA) records, revise team runbooks, and create concise system reports on performance trends.

Eligibility Criteria & Educational Qualifications

Pitney Bowes keeps the entry process open to fresh engineering talent as long as you possess the core technical foundations and a willing attitude to learn quickly.

  • Degree: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics & Communication, or a closely related branch.
  • Experience: Freshers (0 years) or candidates with up to 2 years of work experience in basic networking, systems support, or scripting.
  • Shift Willingness: Willingness to work in a 24x7 shift-based NOC model, ensuring high availability of key global services.
  • Work Location Preference: Ability to work from the Pune office at least 3 days a week under the hybrid model.

Required Skills & Preferred Certifications

To stand out during the application process, candidates should focus on highlighting their grasp of modern infrastructure tools along with fundamental networking concepts.

1. Networking Core Concepts

A solid understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, Firewalls, Routing & Switching, and VPN setups is mandatory. You should know how data packets travel across global networks and how to isolate communication failures.

2. Scripting & Automation

Knowledge of Python, PowerShell, or Bash scripting. Familiarity with structured formats like JSON/CSV and basic interaction with REST APIs will put you miles ahead of other applicants.

3. Cloud & DevOps Tooling

Foundational exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), version control with Git/GitHub, and awareness of Ansible or Terraform concepts.

Bonus Certifications (Optional but Helpful)

While certifications are not strictly required, having any of the following on your resume will be a clear advantage:

  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) / CompTIA Network+
  • Cisco DevNet Associate
  • ITIL Foundation Certification
  • AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)

Expected Selection Process

The evaluation usually involves three main stages designed to assess your technical capability, scripting aptitude, and cultural fit:

  1. Resume Shortlisting: Applications are evaluated based on academic performance, projects involving networking or DevOps, and relevant certifications.
  2. Technical Assessment / Interview Round: Questions focused on basic networking (OSI layers, IP addressing, troubleshooting steps) and basic live logic or scripting tests using Python or Bash.
  3. Managerial & Behavioral Interview: Discussions about your problem-solving process, interest in automation, shift flexibility, and communication skills.
