The Role: Software Engineer II (Backend & Product Engineering)
At Kulfi, the engineering team believes in high velocity and lean execution. You will step in as a backend-heavy engineer who is not scared to touch client code when required. You will take full accountability for core APIs, distributed data models, uptime, system metrics, and architectural evolution.
This is not a siloed backend role where tickets are handed to you behind a wall. You will sit directly in the room with the founders, designers, and frontend developers. When a feature needs a quick tweak in Flutter or a web interface to get unblocked, you will hop in, patch it, and ship it. Reliability, low latency, and rock-solid data correctness are non-negotiable because the product runs live, real-time sync between two people interacting simultaneously.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Architect Core Services: Build and scale resilient backend services, high-throughput APIs, data models, and background task queues that handle real-time multiplayer state synchronization.
- Own Production Health: Take direct charge of system reliability, comprehensive automated testing, monitoring dashboards, alerting thresholds, zero-downtime database migrations, and disaster recovery plans.
- System Troubleshooting: Quickly isolate and debug live production incidents across the entire stack, including network bottlenecks, server services, Redis caching layers, worker queues, and database indexes.
- Pragmatic Engineering Decisions: Make practical architectural tradeoffs that serve today's immediate scale while ensuring an easy runway to 10x user growth.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product leads and designers to define scope, refine UX flows, establish business metrics, and manage smooth rollouts.
- Cross-Stack Agility: Make focused, surgical changes in Flutter mobile code or web views to deliver features faster or inspect tricky bug reports.
- Mentorship and Code Quality: Participate in deep code reviews, establish high engineering standards, and help younger engineers hone their technical instincts.
- Leverage AI Tooling: Use state-of-the-art AI development tools to speed up delivery while staying completely responsible for code correctness, security, and edge cases.
Eligibility Criteria & Educational Qualifications
- Degree: B.E / B.Tech / M.E / M.Tech in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, or any equivalent STEM degree. Candidates with non-traditional degrees who possess strong production engineering proof of work are also welcome.
- Batch / Experience: Ideally 2 to 4 years of proven production experience in software engineering. What matters most is evidence of shipping and operating real systems, not just years on a resume.
- Work Arrangement: This is a full-time in-person role located at the team's office in Jayanagar, Bengaluru. You must be comfortable working on-site alongside the founding team.
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong Backend Foundation: Solid hands-on expertise in at least one modern backend language and framework (such as Go, Python, Node.js, Java, or Rust).
- Database & Data Modeling: Deep working knowledge of relational database modeling, indexing strategies, query optimization, connection pooling, and data integrity.
- Concurrency & Caching: Practical exposure to concurrency patterns, caching solutions like Redis, asynchronous queues, background workers, and failure handling patterns.
- Production Incident Ownership: Real-world experience diagnosing production outages, debugging tough edge cases, and conducting blameless post-mortems.
- Product Judgment: The ability to connect backend design decisions directly to user experience, latency, feature activation, and operational cloud costs.
- Bonus Skills (Good to Have): Familiarity with Dart / Flutter, WebSockets, real-time messaging, end-to-end encryption concepts, and Docker / CI/CD pipelines.
